Title: Changes in the Southern Ocean in the recent past: westerly winds, 14C and sea ice
Abstract: Major changes have been observed in the Southern Ocean over the past decades. One the most spectacular is the abrupt decrease in sea ice extent after 2016, following three decades of slight increase. This illustrates well the large multi-decadal variability occurring in the Southern Ocean. The period covered by instrumental period is too short to describe this low frequency variability. Combining paleoclimate proxies, including indirect ones such as the evolution on the interhemispheric difference in atmospheric 14C, with model results allows us to analyze this variability using longer series and to identify some key links between sea ice, ocean and atmospheric circulation.
