While they were there, their discussions with Gaël Becam, the archaeologist in charge of the digs, helped to define the next stages in the interdisciplinary study.

Thibaut Devièse presents metabolomics for radiocarbon dating

Thibaut Devièse took part in the annual meeting of the Réseau Francophone pour le Radiocarbone et autres cosmogéniques : Analyse et InterprétatioN (REFRAIN) and presented the metabolomics methods applied to radiocarbon dating.

Kewan Labeau joins CEREGE as a radiocarbon chemistry engineer

Kewan Labeau has been recruited as a research engineer in radiocarbon chemistry. He will be responsible for the chemical preparation of bones that will be dated on the AixMICADAS accelerator as part of the ANR NeHos project.

Lou Spanneut presents his results on dental sexing at SMAP

CEREGE represented at the conference Mass Spectrometry and Proteomic Analysis (SMAP, Lille). Lou Spanneut presents the initial results of a study on the sexing of faunal teeth, in collaboration with the MSAP (Lille), the LAMPEA (Aix-Marseille) and the EPCC (Tautavel).

Archaeological excavation of the Bossats Palaeolithic site, Ormesson

Damien Flas (LAMPEA) and Thibaut Devièse visited the Bossats Palaeolithic site in Ormesson as part of the NeHos project, to meet the excavation team led by Pierre Bodu (UMR Temps) and discuss the site's dating strategy.

Océane Pollet wins an inter-ED grant for her thesis

Océane Pollet, a student in the M2 STPE programme, has been awarded one of the 10 inter-ED grants for her thesis project. "CO-MET - From archaeological sediments to meteorites; interdisciplinary study of organic compounds through the development of an innovative metabolomics approach".. Well done to her!

Discussion of FTIR results obtained on archaeological sediment samples

As part of the metaMOA project, Océane Pollet and Lou Spanneut made several visits to the IMBE laboratory in Avignon to analyse various archaeological samples using FTIR and pyrolysis-GC-MS and to learn about metabolomics in order to interpret the data.

Longitudinal cutting of a prehistoric reindeer tooth in collaboration with LAMPEA

Gwenaëlle Goude and Lou Spanneut are cutting an archaeological reindeer tooth in order to study its dietary evolution on an intra-individual scale. This is the first time that sequential isotope analyses have been carried out on dentine for this species.

Workshop on the study of archaeological organic matter in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

On 28 and 29 May, the "Study of Archaeological Organic Matter in the PACA Region" workshop was co-organised by CEREGE, IMBE and CEPAM. It provided an opportunity for members of these laboratories to discuss metabolomic approaches to the study of archaeological organic substances.

CT scan of a prehistoric bear canine tooth on the MATRIX platform

Bear canines from the Tournal archaeological site have been measured for the first time on the Matrix platform's CT scan in order to study their internal structure. This will also enable the material to be digitally archived for spectrometric analysis.

Lou Spanneut and Océane Pollet presented the research they are carrying out as part of their studies on a variety of archaeological material from different prehistoric sites in France to secondary school students visiting CEREGE for the Spring Science Fair.

AixMICADAS accelerator used for radiocarbon dating

As part of their training, students in the Archaeology, Sciences for Archaeology Masters (Bioarchaeology course) visited the AixMICADAS radiocarbon unit at CEREGE to find out about the analytical infrastructure for radiocarbon dating.

Organic substances for mummification in ancient Egypt

Barbara Huber has joined CEREGE's Climate team as a post-doctoral researcher under the SALTO agreement between CNRS and the Max Planck Institute. She will be working with Thibaut Devièse on the study of organic substances used for mummification in ancient Egypt.

Study of the Tournal site stratigraphic plans

Lou Spanneut went to Tautavel as part of her thesis at the Centre Européen de Recherches Préhistoriques to study the archives of the Palaeolithic sites of Le Portel and Tournal and to sample a new series of bones and teeth from these sites.

Analysis of a residue from El Guettar

Océane Laroche, a doctoral student at LAMPEA, came to carry out micro-XRF analyses on the Matrix platform with the help of Perrine Chaurand in order to characterise the coloured residues present on certain lithic tools that she is studying as part of her thesis.

Excavation at the Châtelperron archaeological site

As part of the NeHos project (funded by the ANR), Thibaut Devièse visited the Châtelperron archaeological site to meet the excavation team led by Raphaël Angevin and discuss dating issues at this major site in French prehistory.
