Luc BEAUFORT elected AGU Fellow

Luc BEAUFORT, from CEREGE, has been elected a Fellow of the AGU, joining a distinguished group of 54 individuals in the Class of 2024 Fellows. The AGU, the world's largest association of Earth and space scientists, bestows this honour each year on a select number of individuals who have made outstanding contributions. Since its inception in 1962, fewer than 0.1 % of AGU members have been selected as Fellows each year.

AGU Fellows are recognised for their scientific eminence, demonstrated by breakthroughs, discoveries or innovations that advance the Earth and space sciences. Fellows act as external experts, advising government agencies and other organisations outside science on request. Luc BEAUFORT was selected for his exemplary leadership and outstanding scientific achievements, which have significantly advanced our understanding of paleoceanography.

Luc Beaufort is Director of Research at the CNRS, CEREGE (France), and holds a PhD in palaeontology (1991). His research in palaeoclimatology and marine geology focuses on microfossils, where he pioneered the use of AI for species recognition and developed optical methods for estimating the mass of microcalcites. He has extensively studied the link between past tropical oceanography and orbital cycles.

The winners will be honoured at theAGU24which will bring together more than 25,000 participants from over 100 countries in Washington, D.C., and online everywhere from 9-13 December 2024. Reflecting the "What's New for Science" theme at AGU24, the honours reception will recognise groundbreaking achievements that illustrate the continued advancement of science, inspiring the AGU community with their stories and successes.

CEREGE (www.cerege.fr), by joining forces with other major national and foreign research structures but also to industrial and technological actors, is now a centre of excellence in its field (HCERES assessment 2023). Since its creation, it has maintained an essential balance between research and societal issues around themes such as geosciences, sustainable development, natural and man-made hazards, climate, current environments, processes of formation and deformation of the earth's surface under natural conditions and under anthropogenic stress.
