Experimental Modelling & Acoustics Applications
The interest of this pole is that it allows us to study complex wave phenomena, when the wavelength is close to the size of the heterogeneities in the case of porous multiphase heterogeneous media, random or granular media, which theory or purely numerical models do not allow to simulate. It also allows the development of specific measurement tools (sonar, Ultra High Resolution sediment sounder, endoscopic tool, ...), as well as tomography or processing algorithms that can be directly validated in an acoustic tank, through easily reproducible experiments. The problems considered range from underwater acoustics to marine or terrestrial seismic, from slope instability to evolving fractured media, from media including porous cavities to media with variable porosity.
The advantages of such a laboratory are on the one hand :
Scaling of geophysical phenomena
Including chemical, biological or biophysical phenomena (sedimentary ecosystems) that are easily reproducible and inexpensive compared to full-scale offshore campaign studies or geoexploration of the terrain; and on the other hand
Rapid data acquisition compatible with field experiments
And thus to control and study complex evolving wave phenomena with the consideration of three-dimensional effects.
