In Italy, landscapes reveal the history of earthquakes
In recent years, central Italy has been hit by major earthquakes, including two particularly deadly ones in 2009 and 2016. Along the faults, sections of the mountains have subsided while others have risen, revealing sedimentary traces of the past. At Roccapreturo, in Abruzzo, geologists are studying the links between tectonic activity and variations in the landscape, tracing up to 100,000 years of seismic history. This work could help anticipate future tremors.
