The role of women is central to the processes of neolithisation and demographic expansion.

The way they are involved in social organisation depends on the environment and the subsistence economy.

The WomenSOFar project aims to understand how women ate, moved, cared for the young and participated in the activities necessary for the survival of early agropastoral communities (6th-6th mill. BC) in France and the Mediterranean.

The project is organised around a multidisciplinary and holistic approach to the study of human remains. The hypotheses tested concern dietary diversity and differential mobility of women as well as coping strategies (weaning, toddler mobility) and potential links between health status, activity markers and subsistence patterns.

WomenSOFar will contribute to our understanding of the origins of social burdens on women and men today.
